The Founder and President of Patriotic Citizens Initiative, Osita Osemene on Thursday said that the ‘get rich quick’ syndrome among Nigerian youth is responsible for the increasing number of Nigerians who are currently being detained in different prison in China.

“We have seen situations in Nigeria where people capitalize on the situation of the country. Now you see youth and families becoming so desperate to make it at all cost. People become interested in becoming rich in a short time,” Mr Osemene said.

He said his findings showed that most of the Nigerians accused of peddling drugs in Chinese prison may not have carried the drugs from Nigeria.

“Some told their wives they were going to buy shirts; others told their wives they were going to buy handset chargers,” he said.

The Minister of Youth Development, Bolaji Abdullahi, had earlier this year said that over 1, 0000 Nigerians especially youth are in various prisons in China.

Mr Abdullahi had describing the development as a very “serious matter,” and had expressed deep regrets that many Nigerian youths who indulge in drug trafficking do so in a bid to get rich quick, oblivious of the horrendous consequences to their own lives and the image of the country.

The minister however said that the Federal Government has written to the Chinese authorities to provide details of the offences and find a solution to the problem.
