The Senate has criticised the casualization of teachers in Federal Government colleges across the country.

The Senator representing Anambra South, Andy Uba drew the attention of his colleagues to the practice in some federal government schools where teachers work as casual employees for over 11 years without their appointments being regularised.

“Casualization of teachers has impoverished many rather than enrich a lot of Nigerian educators. This practice violates existing laws in Nigeria and international conventions on labour,” he said.

Ahmed Lawan, representing Yobe North said that the practice of employing casual teachers is disheartening and that even with the best teaching facilities; there would be no success if qualified teachers are not motivated.

Other Senators who considered the recruitment of casual teachers as a breach of educational policies were Danjuma Goje (Gombe Central), Adamu Gumba (Bauchi South) and Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South).

The Senate thereafter directed its committees on education and establishment to investigate the alleged appointment of casual teachers in federal government colleges.
