The House of Representatives’ committee on Petroleum Resources upstream said it is considering what they have termed instant justice against oil bunkerers in the Niger Delta region to save the country billions of naira lost annually to oil theft.

At an oversight function at the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) in Abuja, the Chairman of the committee, Muraina Ajibola said drastic measures such as protective wiring that would cause electrocution around oil pipelines, might be considered.

Mr Ajibola said this in response to the call by the Executive Secretary of NEITI, Zainab Ahmed, for a stringent law that will tackle the alarming rate of oil theft and environmental pollution that occurs in the delta region.

He said Nigeria has reached the point when very drastic measures are necessary adding that a public hearing on oil bunkering which will commence shortly, will consider hard measures that will deter illegal oil activities in the country.
