Former executive secretary of the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), Professor Assisi Asobie has blamed the legislature for the corruption in the oil and gas sector.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, he stated that NEITI has been publishing reports since 2006 on the irregularities in the sector, yet the legislature never acted until this year when the problem had become deeply rooted in the system.

Professor Asobie further argued that the probe into the fuel subsidy scheme should have started since 2006 following NEITI’s audit reports on the sector.

He however warned that, the report of the House of Representatives ad-hoc committee on fuel subsidy headed by the embattled member, Farouk Lawan should not be thrown out because of the bribery allegations.
