The Niger state government has released the sum of N275 million as compensations to victims of the January 16, 2012 fuel subsidy protest which took place in some parts of the state.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary (CPS), to the governor, Danladi Ndeyebo on Friday, explained that following the violent protest that greeted the removal of fuel subsidy, the state government set up a committee which went round the state to access the extent of the damage done during the crisis.

The report by the panel which was recently submitted to the governor revealed that 93 properties belonging to 27 persons were destroyed during the protest.

Noting that the state government cannot fully pay for the total damage done to the victims, the CPS however appealed to the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the money

Ndeyebo also noted that a monitoring committee had been set up to monitor the proper use of the money and that the state government expects most of the damaged properties to be replaced within the next three months.
