In a bid to enhance federal government’s plan of increasing power generation and also develop the local content policy, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) has concluded plans to build a $3.5 billion gas plant in Imo state.

The managing director of SPDC, Mr Mutiu Summonu disclosed this during a courtesy visit by top executives of the Dutch Oil Company, to the government house in Owerri the Imo state capital.

According to Mr Summonu, the gas plant will serve as a major supplier of gas to domestic market and generate gas to various power plants across the country as well as provide job opportunities for the unemployed.

Mr Summonu also noted that the gas plant will be situated in Assa north in Ohaji Egbema local government area of the state which is known for its richness in gas resources.

In his response, the governor of Imo state,Mr Rochas Okorocha expressed joy at the plan, noting that the gas plant aligns with the development plan of the government and he pledged that the state government will play a major role to ensure immediate commencement of the project.

He also assured all stakeholders of adequate security and good working relationship between the host communities and the oil company.
