A U.S. teenager has died while on his way to a Sweet 16 party in a double-decker bus after he put his head out of the emergency hatch and hit the underside of a New Jersey highway overpass.

Police said the 16-year-old was among 65 teenagers aboard the bus on Friday night as it crossed the George Washington Bridge from New York City.

The accident occurred at the Fletcher Avenue overpass of Interstate 95 at about 6:30 p.m.

A security guard who was on the bus, said he had warned the teenagers severally not to tamper with the hatch but they didn’t heed his warnings.

He continued saying while he went downstairs to complain of heat to the driver downstairs, he heard two of the teenagers screaming.

The teenager was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
