The Accountant General of the Federation, Mister Jonah Otunla says Nigeria must in 2013 join countries in the sub region in the implementation of the International Public Sector Accounting Standards for security of the country’s accounting system.

Otunla was speaking at a meeting in Abuja with accountants and auditors general in West Africa. He said the delay by Nigeria to adopt the accounting standards is not appreciated especially after the review of accounting and financial reporting systems in member countries.

He further said work is presently on-going with the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) as well as states and local government council’s commissioners and accountants general to ensure the programme implementation is a success.

Ghana and the Republic of Benin have adopted the accounting standards in their countries and other West African countries are expected to follow suit in the shortest time possible.
