Jonathan meets Amaechi and Dickson over Kalabari oil well dispute

A crucial meeting involving the President Goodluck Jonathan and the governors of Rivers and Bayelsa states is currently on-going at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Traditional rulers from Kalabari, earlier in the week embarked on a protest march in Port Harcourt against the ceding of some of their communities to Bayelsa State.

The two governors, Rotimi Amaechi and Dickson Seriake were joined by delegations from both states to discuss with the president.

The meeting is said to be on the dispute over oil wells between the two states.

A recent ruling by the Supreme Court affirmed that the disputed oil wells which had been in existence, even before the creation of Bayelsa State out of the old Rivers State, actually belong to Bayelsa.

Based on the pronouncement of the apex court, the Bayelsa State governor was recently quoted to have stated that, there was no need for his Rivers State counterpart to dissipate energy on a matter that had been laid to rest by the Supreme Court judgment, confirming that the oil wells belong to Bayelsa State.

Traditional rulers from Kalabari, earlier in the week embarked on a protest march in Port Harcourt against the ceding of some of their communities to Bayelsa State.

The Kalabari oil wells of Soku and Elem-Sangama communities in Rivers State is said to produce 300,000 of oil per day.

We will bring details of the meeting in our subsequent bulletin.
