Security forces, this evening, engaged suspected members of the Boko Haram sect in a shootout that lasted for almost two hours in Ngelzarma village of Fune Local Government Area of Yobe state.

The state commissioner of police, Patrick Egbuniwe, who confirmed the incident, said the hoodlums attempted to burn an Airtel mast in the village but were repelled by security operatives.

Egbuniwe stressed that the hoodlums fled into the bush but are being trailed by security forces are after them.

He said no life was lost in the attack but it was successfully repelled.

Witnesses said the hoodlums went away with some provisions and food items belonging to local traders.

Residents corroborated the police chief’s story, saying the sect members were engaged in a gun battle and are trailed by security operatives around the neighbouring villages.

Ngelzarma is 28 kilometres away from Damaturu the state capital.
