The International Institute for Humanitarian and Environmental Law (ISHERL) has dragged President Goodluck Jonathan and six others to a Federal High Court in Abuja for failing to fully implement the National Integrated Solid Waste Management Programme.
In an application brought under the fundamental rights, enforcement procedure rules 2009, the institute claimed that failure to implement the scheme constituted a threat to the life of the Nigerian people.
The National Integrated Solid Waste Management programme was introduced by the federal government in 2006 for the purpose of environmental cleanliness, employment and public health.
The institute alleged that the project had been abandoned due to corruption and inaction of government.
It asked the court for an order restraining the respondents from taking any money from the Ecological Fund office for new projects covered by the waste management schemes.
It also asked the court for an order “directing the respondents to implement the second phase of the waste management programme in order to enforce and ensure the right to life, general satisfactory environment and best attainable state of physical and mental health of Nigerians as guaranteed in African chattered on human and people’s rights.”
Others listed as respondents to the application are Minister of Environment, Secretary to the federal government, Permanent secretaries, the Ecological Fund Office, Minister of Finance and the Attorney General of the Federation.
