The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, on Thursday, announced the indefinite postponement of the public presentation on the results of the People’s Public Sessions on the review of the 1999 Constitution.

According to the Speaker, the postponement was necessitated by a few issues that need to be addressed, adding that a new date will be fixed for the hearing.

The surprise postponement of the hearing was made known several hours after the scheduled time of the hearing, with a number of speakers and invited guests already assembled.

Members of civil society groups and others in attendance, who were part of the collating process from the 360 federal constituencies of Nigeria, complained of a deliberate attempt by the House to scuttle the people’s wishes.

Following the announcement by the House of Representatives a week ago, the conference room was filled to capacity less than one hour to the time of the commencement of presentation of the report of the federal constituencies’ public hearings on the review of the 1999 constitution.

After three hours of waiting, the Speaker of the House, flanked by his deputy and other principal officers, arrived and swiftly announced the indefinite postponement of the presentation and the close of session.

Apologising for the cancellation, spokesperson of the House Mr. Zakari Mohammed, explained that members representing the 360 constituencies were yet to harmonise their stance on the document.
