The Zenith Bank Basketball League for men and women is to start the new season 16 teams, as 5 teams have been added to the initial number of teams in the league, the NBBF said.

According to Daily Trust, Mallam Tijani Umar, the President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation confirmed this information on the telephone, saying that the aim of the inclusion is to achieve robustness in the league and to also make it more colourful.

The new season for the men and women’s leagues, according to him will start in March after the NBBF and their major partners Multichoice Nigeria Ltd and Zenith Bank, PLC endorsed the commencement of the 2012/2013 Dstv Premier League for men to start on Saturday March 9, 2013 and Zenith Bank Women’s League for March 21 respectively.

This will also bring in some changes in the format of which the league use to run in the areas of relegation, as eight of the teams will drop while the other eight teams will qualify for the final play offs. Also, the almost predicable winner of the league most a times will not be possible again as the addition would bring more hostilities.

The Indoor Hall, National Stadium, Abuja will host the commencement phase of the Zenith League for Women while a pre-season press briefing and cheque presentation ceremony will hold in the National Stadium, Lagos on March 28.

Plateau Peaks and new-comers Mark Mentors will be replacing Tapgun Rockets in the Savannah Conference while debutants Oluyole Warriors will taste premiership action in the Atlantic conference.
