The Governor of Niger State, Muazu Aliyu, has stated that the present attempt at amending the Constitution by the National Assembly is unnecessary.

The governor said this when declaring open the 39th Conference of Chief Judges, Grand Khadis and Presidents, Customary Courts of Appeal of Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory in Minna, the Niger State capital.

He explained that rather than amending the constitution, the means of adequate and proper implementation of the document must be worked out, just as proper interpretation of some controversial sections of the Constitution by the Judiciary is of absolute necessity.

Governor Aliyu wondered why the nation is in a hurry to amend the constitution while established democracies like the United States of America that has survived for over 200 years have not amended their constitution more than five times.

”We need interpretation of the constitution not amendment. The judiciary should wake up to its responsibility to ensure the entrenchment of democracy,” the governor declared.
