Obafemi Martins

Super Eagles striker, Obafemi Martins has finally quit Spanish club; Levante for Major League Soccer side, Seattle Sounders in the United States.

Martins who announced his transfer on his tweeter said the move is a big step to take in his career but insists that he is ready for the big challenge.

The much-travelled striker, who has been recalled to the Eagles for a world cup qualifier against Kenya later this month, thanked his fans for their support.

The 28 year old has played in Italy with Inter Milan and in the English premier league with Newcastle United and Birmingham City.

He also played for Germany Bundesliga side, Wolfsburg and Rubin Kazan based in Russia.

Buyout Clause

Martins actually paid the buyout clause in his contract with Levante from his pocket to facilitate his move to his new club in a speedy manner, the Spanish club confirmed on Tuesday.

It is thought that the former Inter Milan and Newcastle United striker made the payment, said to be about three million euros ($3.9 million, pound sterling2.6 million) so he can join Major League Soccer side Seattle Sounders.

“Obafemi Martins has deposited this afternoon at the headquarters of the Spanish professional league (LFP) the fee which corresponds to the buyout clause in his contract with Levante,” said a statement on the club’s website.

“The LFP have then proceeded to transfer the fee and it has been deposited with Levante.”

Former Inter Milan and Newcastle United striker Martins was left out of the squad for Levante’s 0-0 draw with Getafe at the weekend after stating his desire to leave the club to join Seattle.
