CAN Kicks Against Amnesty For Boko Haram

The leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) have restated their opposition to the granting of amnesty to members of the Islamic sect Boko Haram saying the call for amnesty by Cardinal John Onaiyekan and Bishop Mathew Kukah does not represent the general interest of the association.

The General Secretary of the association, Reverend Musa Asake who addressed a news conference in Abuja urged President Goodluck Jonathan to dismiss the whole idea of amnesty for an unrepentant group saying it will be a panacea for further confusion in the country.

He advised the federal government to instead begin the process of compensating and alleviating the sufferings of the victims of Boko Haram adding that the continued call for amnesty by some northern elders is a strategy by the northern leaders to get a better deal for those they have impoverished the country over the years.

The association also advised the Ja’amatu Nasril Islam to re-examine its value system that has made them spokesperson for Boko Haram members without being sensitive to the victims of Boko Haram.
