The 26-year-old Spaniard has won seven of the past eight editions and only missed it in 2010, when he did not play and the trophy went to compatriot Fernando Verdasco.

He will be playing his opening match tomorrow  hoping for a triumph after his loss against world number one Serbian Novak Djokovic at the Monte Carlo Masters with a clinical 6-2 7-6 victory in the final .

Nadal, who returned to action in March after seven months outage with injury, lost an eight-year reign at the Monte Carlo Masters.

Meanwhile, world number two, Maria Sharapova is looking forward to starting her defence of the tennis grand prix in Stuttgart later this week.

The world number two, seeded one in Germany, thinks the tournament will be the perfect preparation for the French Open next month.

Sharapova is due to start her title defence either against Germany’s Mona Barthel or Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic.
