The Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji

Justice Okechukwu Okeke of a Federal High Court, Lagos has adjourned the trial of the Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, indefinitely, accusing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of deliberately delaying the matter to blackmail the court.

Mr Ikuforiji is being prosecuted along with his personal assistant, Oyebode Atoyebi, by the EFCC for money laundering charges, part of which was allegedly receiving over N500 million from the House of Assembly without going through a financial institution.

Justice Okeke, who retires from the bench on May 18, said his decision to adjourn sine die (indefinitely) was in the interest of justice to thwart EFCC’s tactics to blackmail the court.

The court had earlier granted several adjournments at the instance of the prosecution.
