The premises of the Ondo State High Court, Akure, the venue of the tribunal hearing the petitions against the result of October 20, 2012 governorship election, in which INEC declared Olusegun Mimiko as the winner was filled to capacity, with heavy security presence.

This was due to the appearance of the three main candidates in the election: Governor  Mimiko of the Labour Party, Rotimi Akeredolu of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Olusola Oke of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), parties’ officials and loyalists at the venue.

The tribunal proceeding of the day was the adoption of the written addresses of the petitions.

The counsel of the appellants, Akin Olujimi of ACN and Patrick Ikweator of PDP prayed the tribunal to nullify the governorship election because it was characterised by irregularities including the over-bloating of the voter’s register and non-accreditation of voters in some parts of the state.

However, the counsels to Governor Mimiko, Wole Olanipekun; LP, Yusuf Ali and Onyechi Ikpeasu of INEC prayed the tribunal to quash the two petitions and affirm the result of the governorship election because the claims of the petitioners lacked merit and could not be substantiated.

At the end of the adoption procedures, Mr Mimiko’s Counsel on behalf of the legal teams thanked the tribunal judges for their tolerance and understanding.

The Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Andover Ka’kaan thanked all parties involved in the tribunal for their tremendous cooperation. He commended the conduct of the legal counsels for peacefully resolving all arguments in the petitions.

Justice Ka’kaan however adjourned judgement in the two petitions till a later date; adding that all concerned parties will be duly notified of the date.

The Chairman of the three man election tribunal, Justice Andover Kaa’kaan has promised that the judgement will be fair and just; and virtually all the people of Ondo State are eagerly waiting for this.
