The Federal Government in collaboration with the World Bank is to spend $659 million in tackling erosion menace in 11 states of the country, including Cross River State.
The task team leader of the World Bank for New Map Project handling the Nigeria Erosion and Water Shed Management Project, Mr. Steve Danyo, disclosed this during a courtesy call on the Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke, at the Governor’s office in Calabar, the state capital.
Danyo noted that the World Bank is pleased with the way the Cross River State government is tackling the erosion menace with its Ministry of Environment in view of its devastating impact on lives and properties of the residents.
According to him, the engineering designs for the identified project sites in the state have been approved by the World Bank, adding that the project is aimed at putting a stop to erosion menace especially in rural communities.
On his part, Mr. Imoke noted that the execution of the project has the potential of creating effective relief, and that the state government is very keen on its realisation.
He gave the assurance of close monitoring of the contractors who would handle the project, for effective and timely delivery.
Four sites have already been identified and given approval to commence work on by the World Bank.
