As part of plans to advance pro-bono services to people in prison the Legal Aid Council has called on lawyers to collaborate with the council to bring the services effectively to those who need it.

The Chairman of the Governing Board of the Council, Mr. Bolaji Ayorinde, said the council is setting up systems that will ensure that there is collaboration between the council and the bar.

He stated that even though some lawyers have been taking up pro-bono services, the Act setting up the council empowers it to regulate the services to ensure that beneficiaries are properly and adequately served.

The council stated that the collaboration will go a long way to solving the problems of awaiting trial inmates and congestion in Nigeria’s prisons.
