Constitution Review: Plateau North Senatorial Zone Opposes Single Term

The members of the Plateau North Senatorial district have unanimously opposed the proposed six-year single term for the offices of the president and governors, except on the condition that the principles of rotation are included in the constitution amendment.

The zone took this stand at the end of a one-day constitutional parley on the Senate committee report on the review of the constitution in Jos, Plateau State, North Central Nigeria.

The meeting which was presided over by Senator Gyang Pwajok, representing the zone at the upper chamber, also took other major decisions regarding the constitution amendment.

Those issues included abolition of local government/state joint account, creation of distinct offices of minister of justice and attorney general, and creation of first line charge for certain bodies and offices as well as funding of state independent electoral commissions and state houses of assembly.

Mr. Pwajok who also convened the meeting, describe it as tasking and a worthwhile exercise as the process of amending the constitution must be thorough and people-oriented.
