A former Minister of Defence, Theophilus Danjuma on Saturday blamed the leadership of the country for the near collapse of all sectors of the economy and current security challenges, describing the entire nation’s economy as being in tatters.

He was speaking in Zaria shortly after he was conferred with the traditional title of ‘Jarmai Zazzau’ by the emir of Zazzau, Shehu Idris for his philanthropic gestures and role in uplifting education in Nigeria.

Mr Danjuma emphasized that the fight against the Boko Haram insurgency cannot be tackled by use of force whereby there is wide disparity between the few rich and a multitude of the poor.

He said that Nigeria as a nation and the north in particular has never been in short supply of politicians, but lamented that what has been in short supply are patriotic leaders who can give the nation a clear sense of direction.

Mr Danjuma added that the present situation in the country calls for a sober reflection rather than politicians making inflammatory statements and political tantrums ahead of 2015 elections.

Despite the many years of mismanaged opportunities and resources, Mr Danjuma expressed optimism that the country and the north can be reawakened and rebuilt to achieve greatness, if there is peace and genuine reconciliation among political leaders.

Meanwhile President Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated Mr Danjuma, on his conferment with the traditional title of Jarmai Zazzau.

Mr. Jonathan said he joins Mr. Danjuma’s family, friends, associates, former colleagues in the Armed Forces, protégés and admirers in all parts of the country to felicitate with him on being honoured for his immense contributions to the development of the nation, according to a statement by presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati.

Mr. Abati said the president believes that Mr. Danjuma’s career in the Armed Forces and public service of Nigeria, as well as his philanthropy and generosity to communities in all geo-political zones of the country, have ensured that he will be continually honoured and celebrated by an appreciative nation.

The president also commended the Emir of Zaria for honouring the former Chief of Army Staff and Minister of Defence whose outstanding personal contributions to the progress of institutions and communities in Nigeria includes the recent donation of over N2 billion to the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria for the construction of a new library, lecture hall, auditorium and administrative block.

He prayed that God continues to bless Mr. Danjuma with good health and grant him many more years of great service to his beloved fatherland. The retired general is to be honoured with the title on Saturday in Zaria, Kaduna State.
