Governor of Osun state, Mr.
Rauf Aregbesola has proposed the establishment of a driving school to provide the necessary training and guidelines on road usage.
The governor disclosed this while blaming the high rate of accidents on highways to “inexperience of motorists” during a meeting with members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Osogbo.the state capital.
The seminar was organised by the Osun Council of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
In his speech entitled “The Road” Governor Rauf Aregbesola pointed out to the participants that the transport sector is an indispensable component of the overall development of the economy which explains why the sector received a big share of the year 2013 budget with N30.2 billion representing, 25.37 per cent.
Speaking on the high level of accidents recorded on the roads, the Governor said inadequate knowledge on driving rules is the major challenge.
The state Chairman of the NURTW, Alhaji Isiaka Afolabi who cited the maxim that man seeks knowledge from the cradle to the grave stated that the Union recognises importance of training and retraining of its members by organising such a seminar to broaden their scope.
Alhaji Afolabi while acknowledging the ongoing transformation in the state particularly in the area of road construction called on government at all levels not to see NURTW as registered Union alone but endeavour to intimate them on matters regarding transportation in the state.
