The House of Representatives has stepped into the on-going confrontation between the Rivers state governor, Mr Rotimi Ameachi and the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Joseph Mbu.

The House on Wednesday directed its Committee on Police Affairs and Justice to meet with the office of the Inspector General of Police, the Police Service Commission and the Rivers state government and recommend ways of improving the working relationship between the police command and the state government.

Moving the motion during the plenary session, Representative Peter Edeh, in a motion, said the conflict can lead to breakdown of law and order in the state if urgent steps are not taken.

The duo have been involved in a war of words as Mr Amaechi expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of the Police Commissioner and demanded his immediate transfer out of the state.

He accused Mr Mbu of derailing from his legitimate function of protecting lives and property, resulting in an upsurge in insecurity.

The governor made the call when the chairman of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) governing board, Gordon Bozimo paid him a visit in Port Harcourt.

Mr Bozimo had voiced his concerns over the recent kidnap of three corps members posted to the state, a crime the governor accused Mr Mbu of being responsible for.
