The Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission in readiness to conduct local government election in the state has announced October 26th this year as election Day.

The state governor, Abdul Fattah Ahmed last month inaugurated and swore in members of the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission with a mandate to organize a free, fair and acceptable local government election in the state.

Nearly a month after the inauguration, the commission held a stakeholders forum where it announced October 26th this year as election date for the local government election in the state.

However, some political parties especially the opposition have expressed their reservation on the ability of the commission to conduct generally acceptable local government election in the state.

Different political parties immediately swung into action by organizing various meetings to sensitize their members to strategize for the forthcoming election.

In order to educate and guide the political parties not to run afoul of the rules, the umpire organized a one day interactive forum with the political parties where they expressed their readiness to partake in the local government election.

While the ruling party of Peoples’ Democratic Party boasted of its determination to reclaim the only local government which until now had been under the control of the Action Congress of Nigeria, the ACN on its part expressed reservation on the ability of the umpire not to be biased.

The state chairman of the Congress for Political Change[CPC], Suleiman Buhari on his part introduced the legal angle to the issue wondering whether the present members of the commission has the legal right to conduct the election since the electoral act has not been amended but however corrected by the chairman of the commission.

The commission allayed the fears of the opposition assuring of its readiness not to be biased and seek for collaboration of all in the conduct of the election.
