Brazilian Basketball Star Schmidt Enters Hall Of Fame

Brazilian basketball star Oscar Schmidt has been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts today.

Schmidt is considered basketball’s unofficial all-time scorer with 49,737 points during a career that spanned nearly thirty years. The 6’9″ (2.05 metre) Schmidt, who played both guard and forward, was picked by the New Jersey Nets in the sixth round of the 1984 NBA draft but didn’t report to the team in order to keep his amateur status and starred for the Brazilian national team before playing for Brazilian, Spanish, and Italian professional leagues.

The 55-year-old Schmidt underwent brain surgery in May of this year for a cancerous brain tumour and is reportedly still battling the disease.
