The federal government has honoured Nigeria’s athletic sensation, Blessing Okagbare for her wonderful performance and making the country proud at the 2013 athletic championship in Moscow.

President Goodluck Jonathan gave N3m to the athlete and N3.5m to the coach.

Olympic and world medallist in the long jump and world medallist in the 200m, Okagbare is also the African record holder in the 100m.

The president called on young Nigeria ladies to emulate the athlete, while he also charged the ministry of sports to do all it can to ensure that the country wins more medals in future sporting events, promising that said sports and sports ambassadors will from now on no longer be treated with levity.

The Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi on his part, said he is grateful for the discovery of Blessing Okagbare and the support of the President and the Delta state governor as he looked at athletics in Nigeria with nostalgia.

Reacting to the kind gesture of President Goodluck Jonathan in recognition of good performance, Okagabre flanked by the Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, said the President has ignited her to want to do more for the sake and image of Nigeria.
