President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said corrupt individuals should no longer be rewarded or celebrated in order to put an end to corruption in the country.

President Jonathan said this while speaking at the opening ceremony of the 54th Annual Conference of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES) holding in the federal capital territory Abuja.

The president called on all Nigerians to go beyond blaming government and the police, but that they should at all-times frown at individuals who live above their means.

The event also witnessed the conferment of fellowships on Dr. Eyitayo Lambo and the Minister of Finance; Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala

Jonathan noted that the theme of this year’s conference, Institutional Reforms and Economic Development, was timely insisting that Nigerians need to get involved in fighting corruption

President of the society, Prof. Akin Iwayemi expressed optimism that government institutions in Nigeria can be made to work better for democracy to thrive.
