A local petroleum depot exploded in Apapa local government area of Lagos state on Tuesday claiming two buildings, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said .

The explosion, which occurred at 12 and 14 of Edmor street by Wilmer crescent in Olodi, Apapa, claimed no lives but resulted in the evacuation of the occupants of the buildings.

According to the Information and Public Relations Officer of NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, other emergency agencies were also involved in putting out the fire.

Mr Farinloye, who said that the state and federal fire services were called to respond to the emergency as soon as they were informed, faulted the location of the depot.

“I think it’s carelessness by the management of the depot” because erecting such a structure in a densely populated residential area is wrong, he said.

He stressed that residents should have protested such in the first place.

A Divisional Police Officer who visited the scene on Wednesday morning declined to comment stating that he was not authorised to do so.
