The coordinator for Friends of Rugby, Ntiensi Williams, says the 7-a-side rugby tournament to be organised is in commemoration of Nigeria’s independence which was celebrated last week October 1st by Nigerians at home and in the diaspora.

The IRF Educator in Nigeria assured that it is another opportunity for Nigerians to experience the game of Rugby at its highest again.

On the tournament programme, Ntiensi said allocation has been made for 16 teams to participate in the tournament this year, which is passing as the 5th edition of the 7-a-side tournament themed ‘Independence Rugby 7-a-side Championship’ with four international teams coming into Nigeria.

Teams from UK, South Africa, Egypt and Ghana will present the local rugby team the opportunity to size themselves up with the foreign teams to gauge their standard.

He added that the organisers are looking to make the tournament the Nigerian leg of the 7s championship to which the Confederation of African Rugby boards is considering endorsing where the country can now start having international teams participate in it.

Ntiensi said on preparation and arrival, umpires from South Africa and other regions are billed to officiate the tournament while some of the foreign teams are already arriving on Thursday.

He however hinted that the tournament is what the International Rugby Federation will use as a yardstick to measure Nigeria’s readiness to host a Rugby competition.
