Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola is seeking the approval of the State House of Assembly to create 27 new Local Government Areas in the state.

Presenting an executive bill for the creation of the new Local Government Areas to be called Local Council Development Areas before the House, at the State Assembly Parliament in Osogbo, the state capital, the Governor said that the decision to create the new councils is to ensure that development gets to the nooks and crannies of the state.

Delivering his speech titled, ‘Making Government Count at The Grass Roots’, Governor Aregbesola said that the new local governments which will operate a parliamentary system of government to avoid financial constraints would be known as local council development areas and would in addition be headed by Chairmen and Vice Chairmen who will be elected from among the councillors in the area.

The Governor also informed the House that the bill would seek the approval of the parliament for the creation of the office of council managers for the new Local Governments, saying that the council managers would be civil servants in the employment of the Local Government Service Commission from Grade Level 14 and above.

He maintained that the bill is expected to re-engineer the local government system in the state to serve as a pace setter for other states in the country.

The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Najeem Salaam assured that the house would give special consideration to the bill, in the interest of the people of the state.

The clamour for the creation of additional local government areas in Osun State has been on before the advent of the current administration. Going by the assurance of the Speaker that the House of Assembly would look into the bill and facilitate its quick passage into law, Osun State would then have 58 Local Government Areas.
