The governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi has written a cheque of 20 million naira for the purpose of clearing a bank debt owed the bank by Anam farmers of Anambra state.
Following the 2012 flood devastation which destroyed homes and farmlands of Anam farmers in Anambra West Local government area of Anambra state, victims were unable to repay a loan of 13 million naira obtained from the bank.
Intervention from the state government, however, brought relief to them as Governor Peter Obi, presented them a cheque of 20 million naira to clear their debt and to support them in the next year’s farming. 13 million naira of the 20 million naira given was for the debt settlement while seven million naira was given as part of the Faith Based Farmers Loan, the latest innovation of the state government to encourage farmers through the church. It is an interest free loan.
The governor made this known during a visit to affected communities including Ogbaru, Anambra East and West, Awka North and Ayamelum. Governor Obi explained that the gesture is in line with the government’s resolve to fight extreme hunger and poverty in the poor areas of the state.
He also promised to help the people in their recovery and rehabilitation once the flood abated.
