The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) has called for the passage of the NOSDRA amendment bill to enable the agency carry out its mandate.

The Director General of the agency, Mr Peter Idabor, told journalists in Abuja on Friday that the NOSDRA law, when passed, would chart a course for corporate responsibility in the Niger delta region.

NOSDRA lacks strong legislative framework to allow its enforcement of laws on oil spill and remedial exercises.

At a meeting of top officials and staff of the agency held to strategize for 2014, the chairman of the NOSDRA Governing Board, Mr Lancelot Anyanya, said there was the need to redefine contacts in the industry by eliminating all adverse operations through strong legislative framework.

The yet to be addressed oil spillage in the Niger delta region and the inadequate compensation by the oil companies are some of the reasons for restiveness in the region.

Mr Anyanya emphasised that the agency would no longer tolerate degradation of the environment by oil companies.

He said that the agency was also planning to mobilize oil producing communities to join in the monitoring and reportage of spillage for speedy checks and sanctions.

NOSDRA has set up a web based platform for the purpose and will move on to the use of mobile phone in the near future.
