Senate Committee on Police Affairs is on a fact finding mission to Rivers State over the alleged disruption of Save Rivers Movement Rally in Port Harcourt that got a serving senator of the State and several others wounded last Sunday.

The committee chairman, Paulinus Uwagwu, who spoke to journalists in Government House, Port Harcourt said the committee will submit its findings to the Senate when they resume plenary.

“We are now equipped to brief the senate on the crisis here in Port Harcourt,” Senator Uwagwu said.

The committee had visited the Rivers State Police Commissioner, Mbu Joseph Mbu who told them that, he was acting on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police in a question and answer session.

Mr Mbu said that the Save Rivers Movement did not obtain a police permit for the rally, insisting that  the police did not use rubber bullets as stated in some media media reports.

“The police is a civil force and I lay emphasis on smoke,” he said.

The committee members also visited the venue of the proposed Save Rivers Rally and later visited Government House Port Harcourt.
