The National Chairman of Transformation Party, Emmanuel Mok, has added a new theory to the plethora of explanations given for the on-going political crisis in Rivers State – the governorship ambition of Nyesom Wike, the Supervising Minister of Education.

Speaking on Sunrise Daily, Mr Mok said “the reason why there is a problem is that Wike wants to go for governorship and Amaechi does not want. That’s the reason why there’s a problem.”

“The president should not get involved. It’s politics.”

Mr Mok also faulted the actions of Nigerian politicians who he described as ‘self centred.’

“The elections are coming. It’s good for the police to make the politicians aware of the fact that their actions or inactions affect the general populace.”

“A lot of politicians have become self centred or very narrow minded and are pursuing agendas that are not very nationalistic… Politicians are not doing what they are supposed to do.”

Commenting on the Block Budget Directive by the All Progressives Congress, Mok said it is evidence of “a very heated up polity” and added that the opposition has given an ‘opaque’ condition for rescinding on its resolution to block executive bills in the National Assembly.

He highlighted different angles to the issues in Rivers State including pending court cases involving local government chairmen who should be reinstated, “that in itself is a cause for continued heating up of the polity in Rivers state.”

He also mentioned the factionalisation of members of the State House of Assembly and the issue of the budget which was not passed in the hallowed chambers.

“So when you say that executive bills will not be passed until the issues in Rivers state are resolved, I want to say, what would be the mark point where you can decide that these issues have been resolved. How do you determine that those issues have been resolved?”

“You find that you’ve given a very opaque condition for somebody to meet. The person doesn’t know when he meets that condition.”

Mok expressed doubts over allegations that CP Joseph Mbu was one of the main problems in the state as  he is held in high esteem in Oyo state where we was once the Police Commissioner.

Mok also linked the call by some state governor s for state police to Governor Chibuike Amaechi’s alleged desire to have the CP under his control.

He also discredited claims that Mbu’s alleged impunity was backed by the Presidency, stating that the Commissioner answers to superiors including the DIG, AIG and IG.

“Mbu must be protected by the statuettes… The fact that Mbu has remained in Rivers State till now can only be because Mbu has not really broken the rules. If he has, I do not see how the IG would allow him to remain in Rivers State up till now.”

He further explained that there are two strong factions in the state including the Amaechi camp and Nyesom Wike camp. He added that both parties have strong ambitions in Rivers State politics, which will not be deterred by the Presidency or the Police IG.

In his opinion, Mbu was placed in Rivers State because of his strong character which will not permit him to be pocketed.
