Some of Nigeria’s past leaders at the Tuesday meeting are; General Yakubu Gowon, Mr Ernest Shonekan, Mr Shehu Shagari, General Ibrahim Babangida, and General Abdulsalami Abubakar.

State governors, Senate President, David Mark, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal and former Chief Justices of the Federation are also attending the meeting, which is holding 11 months after the last session was held.

The meeting started at about 10.45am, with the governors of Jigawa and Ekiti States saying the opening prayer.

The Vice President of Nigeria, Namadi Sambo, is the deputy chairman, of the council.

There are indications that the meeting, usually held to discuss pressing national issues, will look at the modalities of the proposed national conference, the 2015 general elections and the celebration of Nigeria’s centenary.

At the last meeting of the council held on March 12, 2013, a former Bayelsa State Governor, Mr Diepreye Alamieyesegha, and some others were granted state pardon.
