Awolowo Foundation LectureSpeakers at the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation Lecture, which is ongoing in Lagos State, are asking for true federalism as proposed by foremost politician and former premier of the western region, late Obafemi Awolowo.

The lead speaker at the event, Professor Pius Adesanmi, stressed the need for Awolowo’s roadmap to be urgently considered ahead of the proposed National Conference in order to fix the anomalies created by the constitution.

Professor Adesanmi emphasised Awolowo tenets, that a federal constitution must at all times be sensitive to minority and sufficiently take care of their legitimate fear of domination whenever the need arises.

The executive director of the foundation, Dr Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu, said that the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation, being the custodian of the statesman’s intellectual legacy, had decided to place his prescriptions on the matter of the country’s constitution before Nigerians and intending delegates to the proposed National Conference for “rigorous and rational” re-examination.

She pointed out that a symposium at this time on the Nigerian Constitution could not be timelier, given the fact that the long-awaited national conference will start on march 18.

Awolowo had called for a Nigeria with one constitution and one law.
