Ugonma AdegokeThe organiser of Women Rising, Ugonma Adegoke has called on Nigerian women to be more daring and pursue their dreams without being apologetic to the men.

She was a guest on Rubbin’ Minds on Channels Television where discussion centred on the ongoing activities in commemoration of the International Women’s Day.

While emphasizing the need for women to support one another and create platforms for development, she said that the world would be a better place if both men and women were doing their parts about career and dreams without considering their gender as a barrier.

She described her project, Women Rising, as an annual musical concert specially designed as a platform for women in arts and particularly those with musical talents to be celebrated in commemoration of the International Women’s Day.

The Curator of the project, 100 Unsung Heroes, Bayo Omoboriowo, who was also on the show, agreed with Adegoke on her views about Bayo Omoboriowowomen, and explained that his project was about highlighting and celebrating women who were not making name but making impact on the society in their little ways.

The project which would lead to the making of a documentary would focus on women who are doing exceptionally well in different areas of endeavours, irrespective of their socio-economic background.

Speaking of his experiences having met several women in the process of making his documentary, Omoboriowo cited examples of sacrifices made by some Nigerian women for the sake of giving the best education to their children. This is among virtues he believes should not be ignored by the society, especially the men.

He explained that although Nigeria has a lot of strong women doing great things and they have indeed received a lot of such names nominated to be on the list, his team was however yet to identify all the 100 names that would finally make the special list which has been designed in commemoration of Nigeria’s 100 years of existence.

According to him, the essence of this is to present these women as role models for younger ladies within their communities.

Speaking on the proliferation women biased causes in the country; Adegoke noted that it was not over-flogged to have different causes to celebrate women, adding that ‘Women Rising’ was not one of those events where women gather to attack the menfolk. He stated with emphasis that the event would particularly celebrate men as well, because she was of the belief that women were not made to stand alone.

According to her, they want to celebrate women in a musical manner with an international outlook, while giving them a platform to be promoted; as the essence of the ‘Women Rising’ concert is to get excellence rewarded among women who are musically gifted and to make people see creative work as a source of livelihood.

The 2-day event starts on Saturday March 15 with a literary event, while the musical concert is slated for Sunday March 16. It features Nigerian singing sensation, Waje and other notable female acts.
