Water-problem-in-NigeriaNational Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged government at all levels to recognize availability and access to water as a critical human right which must be complied with.

Executive Secretary of the Commission, Professor Bem Angwe, who made this call as the global community observed the International World Water Day, noted that human right to water places certain responsibilities upon government to ensure that people can enjoy sufficient, safe, accessible and affordable water without discrimination.

In a statement signed by the Chief Press Officer of the Commission, Fatima Mohammed, Professor Angwe advised government to take reasonable steps to avoid contaminated water supply and to ensure there are no water access distinctions amongst citizens.

The commission urged the National Assembly to hasten the passage of water-specific bills before it and for the executive arm of government to ensure the full implementation of the policies as well as step up on budgetary allocation to ensure every Nigerian has access to safe and affordable water.
