Bringing Sanity To Anambra Was One Of My Greatest Achievements – Peter Obi

The former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has stated that one of his greatest achievement as a governor of the state was bringing sanity to the state.

Appearing as a guest on Channels Television’s Saturday breakfast programme, Sunrise, the former governor spoke extensively on his achievement in the state during the eight years of his administration.

He stated that the transition was like moving from a disordered environment to a more structured environment. He mentioned that changing the state that was not doing very well in academics to the one that was recently awarded the best state in WAEC and NECO examinations was one of such landmarks.

Emphasizing the achievements in the education sector, he said that the state witnessed about 60-65% success in the WAEC examination compared to where it was before.

He disclosed that ever since the state has been created, it had never been among the best, but by virtue of his commitment which was not about having 100% but leading in the right direction, his state emerged as the best.

Mr Obi revealed that one of his administration’s approaches was turning the state into a demand driven and not a supply driven economy, and commended the people of his state for their support during his administration and helping him achieve all he did.

In terms of infrastructure, Mr Obi said that his state was the first to do poverty mapping and pay good attention to access roads. He stated that a road that used to take about 4 hrs to drive would now take 15 minutes in Anambra State, noting that his state had done over 800km of roads, with improved medical infrastructural amenities.

“Anambra state has done the best of roads in the country”, he said.

The strength of the former Governor’s political party, the All Progressive  Grand Alliance (APGA) also came to the fore, as Mr Obi disclosed that his party, under the leadership of  Victor Umeh, remained a strong one despite the internal issues they were encountering.

He said that the party still stands with people of character, and its ability to produce the current Governor of the state, Willie Obiano, validates its status. He noted,  “Leadership is about consistency where disagreement may occur, APGA is strong and will continue to be”.

Mr Obi also spoke about life and plans after the Government House in Awka. He revealed that he would not be running for a seat in the Senate as speculated by some Nigerians, instead, he would prefer to be like a normal Nigerian.

He then called on Nigerians to support President Goodluck Jonathan, advising that those who wish to criticize the Federal Government should endeavour to do so constructively.
