National Confab Delegates Discuss Abduction Of School Girls In Chibok

For a second day, the growing level of insecurity in Nigeria has dominated deliberations at the National Conference holding in Abuja.

At the Tuesday session, the conference delegates considered the abduction of about 200 schoolgirls in Chibok, a town on the border between Borno and Adamawa States by suspected members of Boko Haram on Monday.

They described the security situation in Nigeria as unacceptable and stressed the need for the government and security agencies to intensify efforts in the fight against insurgency.

A delegate suggested the closure of the border between Nigeria and countries bordering the nation in the northern and western part.

Although the delegates rose from the day’s plenary without taking a concrete position on the matter, it was clear from their discussion that they felt  pain and frustration over the abduction of the school girls.

Witnesses said the gunmen, who came in Toyota Hilux vehicles and motorcycles, stormed the town and kept firing sporadic gunshots before setting ablaze several houses and shops.

It was also disclosed that the hoodlums carted away several bags of grains and other food items into waiting trucks and buses as residents fled into bushes and farmlands.

Residents also confirmed that the insurgents did not kill any resident or leaders in the town, but the female students were abducted and taken to unknown destination in the forest.

On Monday, the delegates condemned the bomb blast in a motor park in Nyanya, Abuja, emphasising the need for security agencies to maximise their efforts in the war against terrorism and the killing of innocent citizens across the country.

The blast left at least 70 persons dead and dozens injured.

Several delegates expressed displeasure with the deplorable security situation in Nigeria, calling for an end to the trend.

A written motion was submitted to the Conference Chairman by Is’haq Modibbo Kawu and 19 others.
