Michael-OlukoyaAll government owned primary and secondary schools in the 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory are to remain closed on Thursday in protest of the abduction of over 200 girls from a secondary school in Chibok, Borno State.

Addressing reporters on Wednesday, the President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Comrade Michael Olukoya, said that the total shut down would further force the government to do more in the efforts to rescue the girls that were abducted on April 14.

Several women dominated groups have held protests in different states in Nigeria with a ‘#BringBackOurGirls’ demand.

Barbaric Act

Explaining why the teachers are embarking on the protest, Comrade Olukoya said that the teachers would also use the opportunity to protest the killing of 173 teachers by members of the Boko Haram sect.

While appealing to government to provide insurance cover for teachers in the country, he condemned the abduction of the girls describing it as a barbaric act.

“We want to tell the entire world that teachers have been affected the most in the various attacks. We have more of the casualties. We have always clamoured for insurance cover for teachers, because the increasing insecurity in the nation.

“We want the government to act fast in the rescue of the girls,” Comrade Olukoya said.

For over a month now since the girls were abducted, the government has continued to assure Nigerians that the girls would be rescued.

The Boko Haram terrorist group that abducted the girls have requested an exchange of the girls for members of the group held at different detention centres across Nigeria.
