Gov FasholaaThe Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, has commissioned the Gbagada Housing Estate and a recreation park to mark the June 12, 1993 annulled election of late Moshood Abiola.

It was the 21 anniversary of the annulment of June 12, 1993 presidential election and not even the heavy down pour in Lagos could stop the Governor from honoring two prominent figures who were at the forefront of the struggle to defend the poll’s result.

Former Military Governor of Lagos State, Rear Admiral Nduibuisi Kalu and late Babarinde Omojola were honored by the Lagos State Government.

The housing estate and the park were dedicated in their honour.

The 17,195 square meter recreation park would now be known as Ndubuisi Kanu Park. The park is equipped with a variety of recreational facilities for leisure and amusement.

The housing estate at Gbagada, named after the late Babarinde Omojola, has 11 blocks with 88 housing units.

The commissioning was also an opportunity for Governor Fashola to raise the issue of complaints about electoral malpractice, as he appealed to the National Assembly to amend the legislation on access to complaint on electoral malpractice.

He insisted that the rights to complaint should not be limited to a certain period of time.

Like others, Lagos State appears determined to keep the memory of June 12, 1993 and what it represents for the nation’s political history alive. For them, the housing project and the park are suitable symbols for democracy.
