The National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has started at the Eagle Square in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Supporters of some of the aspirants have arrived the eagle square from various parts of the country.

Voting materials, especially ballot boxes, have already been set at the eagle square waiting for delegates to cast their votes to elect members of the party’s National Executive Committee.

Two major candidates are said to be major contenders for the chairmanship position which is said to be zoned to the South-South.

They are Mr Tom Ikimi and former Governor of Edo State Mr Odigie Oyegun.

The merger of the Action Congress of Nigeria, All Nigeria Peoples Party and Congress for Progressive Change made the APC Nigeria’s largest opposition party.

At the convention, the party will be looking to elect leaders who will run its affairs as the 2015 general elections draw near.

Some delegates believe that the convention will ratify the party’s amended constitution and put in place national officers that will pilot the party’s affairs in the 2015 general elections.

While some delegates have expressed the desire to accept whatever the outcome of the convention may be, others feel strongly that their preferred candidate must emerge as the party’s flag bearer come 2015

Posters of party members, including that of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, dotted the venue of the convention, with their loyalists canvassing for supports.

Meanwhile, analysts have argued that the convention would be the first major test for the unity of the All Progressives Congress.
