kayode idowuThe Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Nigeria has insisted that voters without the permanent voter’s card will not be allowed to vote in the Ekiti State governorship election that will hold on Saturday.

In a telephone interview, the spokesman for the chairman of the commission, Kayode Idowu, told Channels Television on Friday that the commission had put everything in place to make sure the election would be free and fair.

According to him INEC began the distribution of the voters’ card since March so that eligible voters could collect their cards before the election.

“We expect that people who have their permanent voter’s card would come to the polling station at 8:00am for accreditation.

“Anyone that has not collected the card has no business being at the polling booth on Saturday. They should take their cards to the same polling booth where they collect it and the problem of someone’s name not being in the register will not occur again.

“Since March, we have been distributing continually at the different local governments,” Mr Idowu said.

The election had down interest from local and international organisations as it seen as a test for the permanent voter’s card which would be used in the 2015 general election.

The american government has sent 30 election observers to Ekiti State ahead of the election that will hold on Saturday.

Security has been beefed up with more police presence in the state, with the police restricting movement in the state for security reasons.
