The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, has said that the template established in the conduct of Ekiti election would be used in Osun and other future elections.
He told reporters in Abuja on Sunday that the era of election rigging, snatching of ballot boxes and thuggery was gone. “People should start thinking about campaigning and winning in a free and fair election.
“We were in Ekiti to showcase that it is possible for Nigerian security agencies to conduct a peaceful, free, fair and credible election in Nigeria. It should be taken as a test case and we will do everything possible to improve on it,” he said.
The police has been commended for its effort in ensuring that the election was peaceful and the election has been described as one of the most credible elections conducted in Nigeria in recent time.
Reviewing the role of the Nigeria police force, the force public relations officer, Mr Frank Mba, also said that the deployment of security officials was customised to Ekiti State to prevent violent acts that may lead to bloodshed and that the residents cooperated with the security agencies.
He denied claims of the selected arrest of some members of the All Progressives Congress, saying the police and other security agencies acted professionally in a non-partisan manner to ensure the conduct of a free and fair and credible election devoid of violence.
