Senate_ChamberThe Senate has asked President Jonathan to direct security agencies not to partner with the Imo State Government to issue identity cards to Northerners residing in Imo State.

This statement came after a conference meeting was held accusing the Government of planning to register Northerners residing in Imo State.

In a meeting on Thursday, at Abuja, the Deputy Majority Leader, Abdul Ningi, drew the attention of the Senate to an alleged plan by the Imo State Government to register Northerners in the state with the aim of issuing them identity cards.

The Federal lawmakers at plenary condemned the alleged plan describing it as unconstitutional and a gross abuse of the rights of citizens.

The Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorochas, had on Wednesday denied reports of plans to issue identity cards to Northerners resident in the state and has described the claims as being falsehood.

Gov. Okorocha, claimed that Northerners have enjoyed long standing hospitality in Imo more than any other state in the South-East and blamed those desperate for power as being behind the attempt to damage the cordial relationship between indigenous people of the state and the Hausa community.
