More than 50 containers made from plastic and venetian glass comprise the 14 art pieces holding 30 types of goldfish from all over Japan.
The art aquarium is a yearly event produced by artist, Hidetomo Kimura, a man obsessed with all things acquatic. He manufactured the artistic fish tanks, produced the dreamy music and even filled the air with fragrant Japanese incense.
After working as a trader and connoisseur of fish for aquatic displays in his twenties, he began looking into how he could combine his love for art, fish and Japanese traditions.
He has been doing the art aquarium for seven years and says this is how 21st century Japan displays its traditions.
“This modern way of showing Japanese motifs has a powerful presence and its ability to project its strength is hidden but present when you see it,” he said.
The goldfish is associated with summer in Japan due to the perceived cooling effect it provides visually.
The art display, which officially opened on Friday, will continue until the end of the summer on September 23.
