The Campaign theme for the year; “Life is Better with Trees”, was aimed at further emphasising the importance of trees to the survival of human and benefit to the environment as it purifies the air, reduces the effect of noise and flooding, as well as enhancing the value of property. It emphasises that without trees human life will be unsustainable.
The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babatunde Fashola, lead the tree planting session at Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie Road, by Emperor Estate,Sangotedo, Eti-Osa East Local Government Area, one of the place the state held this years tree planting campaign.
The campaign was held in six other ceremonial sites, with the Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Adeyemi Ikuforiji, leading the tree planting exercise at Apple Junction, Amuwo Odofin local council and the Deputy Governor, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire at Gbadaga General Hospital, Kosofe Local Government Area.
The First Lady, Dame Emmanuella Fashola, also took part in the campaign with a ceremony held at King’s College Annex Victoria Island, while the Secretary to the State Government, Dr (Mrs) Oluranti Adebule marked the tree planting anneversary at Beckley Road, Ojokoro. The Chief Judge of Lagos, Justice Ayotunde Phillips, planted trees at Ikeja High Court, Ikeja.
The Tree planting exercise was held over all 57 Local Government Areas and local Council Development Areas including military formations, institutions, industries and schools amongst others.
The State Government urged all Nigerians to join the tree planting campaign to achieve a sustainable environment.
The tally includes at least 32 deaths in the past 24 hours.
